History of the Doberman
Dobermann is the only breed originating in Germany that is also named after its creator Karl Friedrich Louis Dobermann (02.01.1834 - 09.06.1894), resided in the town of Apolda, Germany. He is believed to have worked as a tax agent and working as a dogcatcher on the side. As a dogcather he was authorized to capture stray dogs and it was from these dogs his pure breed with speciel attention to instinctive intelligence courage and fast response. The so-called butcher dogs (the earlier Rottweilers), which at the time were a relatively pure breed along with the Pinchers, played a major role in creation of the Dobermans. |
Finally the French Shepard beauceron is believed to be an ingredient in the Dobermans as its four colours (Black, brown, blue and Isabel) are common in Dobermans. The German Shepherd cannot be secluded from the list either at the early stages of Dobermans. In 1895 the breed was officially recognized in Germany under the name “Doberman Pincher” Later on the last word in the name was erased. Mr Doberman never lived to see his breed become recognized. He passed away one year earlier. |
Around the turn of the century the English Manchester Terrier was bred into the Dobermans with the purpose of improving the coat and creating markings that were darker and more outlined. The Manchester terrier also contributed with the very compact almost cat-like paws. So far the Doberman was relatively small dog at only 56 cm and had a rather unrefined appearance. In order to make it taller and more elegant and black greyhound was introduced into the breed. Since about 1910 no other dogs have become part of the Doberman-recipe. |
For many years of the Doberman’s existence it was used guard dogs and K9 in the police force. Since the breeders started aiming for a more relaxed and laid back temper the dogs have been know both as working dogs and family dogs.
